Communications Director

The Communications Director has primary responsibility for ensuring the MRC’s work is getting out to both the media and the public. He or she will be tasked with coordinating the MRC’s strategic and tactical earned media operation with our PR firm and with ensuring the MRC continues to hold a leadership position among its peers in social media communication and influence. He or she will plan and execute all social media activities for multiple Media Research Center (MRC) brands spanning over 12 million Facebook fans and over 600,000 Twitter followers, with a sharp focus on growing the MRC’s reach and engagement on major social platforms and driving traffic to MRC’s web properties.

Additionally, the Communications Director is responsible for achieving all PR and marketing-related goals and for ensuring an overwhelming response to grassroots campaigns targeting liberal media bias. Where appropriate the Communications Director

Will serve as a spokesperson for the organization.


Candidate Profile

  • Social Media Expertise – Candidate must have 2+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated success in building and growing an engaged social media audience on Twitter and Facebook and have a working knowledge of Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Snapchat. 
  • Public Relations Expertise – Candidate must have experience in the public relations field, ideally at a PR firm. Ideal candidates have the ability to execute coordinated PR and social media campaigns in a rapid response fashion.
  • Informed – Candidate must have his/her finger on the pulse of the news cycle and the ability to respond rapidly to breaking stories related to the mission of the MRC.
  • Data-Driven – Candidate must have a passion for tracking performance metrics, identifying areas that need attention, and coming up with plans to address them.
  • Entrepreneurial – Ideally, candidate will have experience building a digital audience through multiple online communication channels. Must be creative, resourceful, proactive, and adaptive.
  • Committed to Conservative Principles – Candidates must understand key conservative values and beliefs and embrace the mission of the MRC.


Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Lead social media strategy development and execution for MRC on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as well as – to a lesser degree – YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Snapchat, and other emerging social platforms.
  • Lead PR strategy in coordination with MRC’s PR firm. This includes strategic planning, establishing and tracking goals, and executing tactical campaigns to maximize earned media for the organization.
  • Monitor the media for news items relevant to the MRC’s mission and coordinate rapid response.
  • Manage social media team (two direct reports) to ensure effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Actively manage and/or direct the management of key social accounts and monitor fan/follower feedback.
  • Stay informed on the latest trends and best practices for all the major social networks and ensure the MRC is always a step ahead of major changes; adjust strategies and tactics as required to maximize performance.
  • Track, analyze, and report performance of social media efforts continuously and make adjustments as necessary to ensure achievement of REACH, ENGAGEMENT and TRAFFIC goals.
  • Direct advertising campaigns on Facebook and Twitter to achieve AUDIENCE GROWTH and EMAIL ACQUISITION goals.
  • Use creative means to plan, organize, and implement a range of social media routine and rapid response campaigns that drive site traffic, engagement, and brand recognition.
  • Coordinate with Digital Communications Team to increase activism (e.g., petitions, phone campaigns) among MRC fans and followers.
  • Coordinate with graphic designer to develop creative and impactful images and content to drive social engagement.
  • Work closely with MRCTV team to create social videos that will engage our audience and achieve video view goals.
  • Coordinate with Development to support all online fundraising efforts.
  • Direct live Facebook events with MRC president (and other conservative leaders) and his fans.
  • Develop and execute digital advertising campaigns to support major initiatives.
  • Manage marketing interns.


Required Experience & Education: 
  • Expert on Twitter and Facebook, including advertising.
  • Ability to manage outside agencies.
  • Strong writing skills and ability to frame social media content to make it interesting and relevant to audience.
  • Ability to identify breaking news and emerging stories on social media and work to insert the organization’s content into them.
  • Ability to network with other social media influencers to maximize reach and engagement for MRC content.
  • Ability to manage multiple campaigns at once.
  • Attention to detail and passion for performance tracking.
  • Solid knowledge of Google Analytics, Facebook/Twitter publishing tools, and other 3rd party social media management tools.
  • Experience managing budgets carefully and precisely.
  • Ability to collaborate with all MRC departments.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems related to the organization's social media channels.
  • Willingness to act as external organizational ambassador with vendors, tech companies, and peer organizations.
  • Ability to publicly present complex social media metrics, concepts, and trends to audiences with nominal knowledge of subject (e.g., donors).
