The Media Research Center is
currently accepting applications for its spring and summer internship
programs.
Application Deadlines:
Summer: EXTENDED TO MARCH 31
Choose a hands-on internship in
one of seven areas:
The News Analysis Division
interns:
Monitor assigned pre-recorded TV
news programs and news publications to document any media bias that they
encounter
Monitor assigned TV network websites to document media bias
Input media bias details and verbatim media bias examples into the News
Tracking System Database, the MRCs state-of-the-art computer database and
archiving system
Contribute to the content of MRC publications and
www.MRC.org
Attend weekly News Division meetings and report on the status of current
projects and discuss current news and trends being documented
Cybercast News Service -
CNSNews.com interns:
Research assigned topics for news articles
Conduct telephone interviews for assignments
Monitor industry trade publications and Internet websites for pertinent news
and information
Adapt to the high-speed atmosphere of a newsroom by working with and meeting
deadlines
Write news articles that appear on Cybercast News Service -
www.CNSNews.com
Attend weekly CNSNews.com meetings and report on the status of current
projects
Communications/PR (News
Analysis Division)
Writing and editing short pieces for the MRC Web page: headlines, blurbs,
reader polls, audio/video clips text, other
Compiling media contact lists, and lists for policy makers, conservative
organizations, and grassroots groups
Help with ongoing review and upgrade of MRC Web site and selected pages,
photos, video clips, etc.
Help write, edit, and distribute press releases, email alerts, and related
correspondence
Help pitch and follow-up on MRC op-eds, Special Reports, Media Reality
Checks, CyberAlerts, and NewsBusters blog items
Help research, write, and copy-edit for monthly newsletter, The Watchdog
Communications/PR (CNSNews.com Division)
Work with the Director of Communications in the CNSNews.com division to
provide communications and marketing support
Research, generate and maintain media databases
Create effective pitches for stories and guests
Pitch stories and guests to producers both personally and through mass
distribution
Book and negotiate interviews
Assist in marketing to and soliciting sponsors and subscribers
The
Business & Media
Institute
interns:
Monitor and track media coverage of assigned economic issues
Research and document media coverage on specific economic and business
issues
Prepare research reports for publication
Conduct research of assigned issues and their economic impact
Marketing/Graphic Design*
Participate fully in developing concepts for ads, publications and print
Assist in fulfilling bookstore, membership and subscription orders
Assist with donors mailings/new member packets and proofing
Assist in major events, promotions and public relations
Assist in website marketing development and outreach
*Candidates with print production and project management experience will be
given preference.
Development/Special Events
Conduct donor and prospect research
Assist with monthly donor mailings
Prepare informational materials for donor prospects
Input data into fundraising software
Assist with fundraising events and event planning
Qualifications:
Solid writing skills, knowledge of current events and politics, proficiency in
Microsoft Word and internet use, adaptability to new software applications,
and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Candidates must have
a passion for politics, journalism, and/or research as well as possess a firm
understanding of conservative principles based on limited government,
individual liberty with responsibility, free enterprise, and a strong national
defense. Qualified candidates are evaluated on their knowledge of current
events and to determine which division of the MRC would best suit their needs
and interests.
Requirements:
Intern candidates must submit an application form, cover letter, resume, and
two to three brief writing; including a paragraph detailing why writing
samples were selected for submission.
Compensation:
Interns are compensated $9.00 per hour and have the option to work up to 37.5
hours per week. Academic credit may be available through your college or
university.

some ways, this 6-month internship has educated
me more than my entire 4 years of college. The
knowledge that I gained of economic, social,
political, and cultural issues while reporting
for CNSNews is in depth, first-hand, and
real
unlike anything I could have taken from a
college text book.
