Director of Development

The Director of Development is responsible for the creation of plans, implementation of strategies, and supervision of fund-raising and donor relation programs of the Media Research Center. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Development, the Director of Development’s role is to manage the day-to-day operational aspects of Development to ensure goals are achieved, including supervision of staff in constituent fundraising positions, events, membership/direct mail, and major and planned gifts.

Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Under direction of the Vice President of Development, provides leadership and focus to the Development department and guides implementation of strategies to meet long- and short-range goals and objectives in the area of development.
  • Supervises and motivates team members, thus ensuring that their work activities are integrated with and supportive of the total development program.
  • Manages and oversees the major donor program and solicitors and other staff involved in making the program successful to meet revenue goals.
  • Manages and oversees events to ensure the events’ success and meeting revenue and attendance/participation goals.
  • Responsible for the administrative functions of the Development Department, including managing numerous program budgets and weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting to MRC executive leadership.
  • Provides oversight of the performance and results of Membership/Direct Mail, Monthly Giving, and donor research to ensure the programs’ success in meeting revenue goals.
  • Approves various copy for donor thank you letters and personal appeals.
  • Coordinates donor visits/trips with solicitors for the MRC President and the department.
  • Serves as the stand-in for the Vice President when travel or other factors prevent the Vice President from fulfilling some of his/her duties.
  • Runs Development Staff Meetings and attends the weekly Senior Staff Meeting.              
  • Contributes to the overall success of the of Development by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President for Development.
Required Experience & Education: 
  • Minimum of five years of related management, fundraising and project/program management experience.
  • Bachelors degree or higher.
Personality Profile: 
  • Extreme organization skills to manage a varied and talented development team and oversee the Development Department’s calendar and activities.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal for communicating with Development staff, other MRC departments, occasional donors, and vendors and editing written communication.
  • Knowledge of fundraising, major gift relationship process, and various fundraising vehicles.
  • A strong appreciation for and proclivity towards the conservative movement.
  • A sense of humor.
  • The ability to effectively manage staff, coordinate project implementation, and work with executive leadership in a fast paced and demanding environment.
