Is there any part of Missouri that's not a "conservative bastion"? Perhaps not, judging by two Times stories.
"Registration on the Republican side appears to be down in traditionally conservative bastions in the southeastern part of the state," wrote Adam Nossiter back on October 18. (Emphasis added.)
Colleague Jeff Zeleny followed upon November 1 by calling the southwest corner of the state, where the town of Springfield is situated, one of its "most conservative bastions."
