The "Sadism" of Mel Gibson's "The Passion"
Missing the point, again: A brief Nathan Lee review on Friday of an exploitative "prequel" to the classic horror film "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" echoes a religiously offensive comment from Week in Review columnist Frank Rich.
Here's Nathan Lee on the new "Texas" flick:"The movie exists to brutalize. Like 'The Passion of the Christ,' it is an invitation to hard-core sadism. Mel Gibson tried to turn atrocity into spiritual catharsis. The producers of 'The Beginning' merely package it, sell it to the masses and hope they don't vomit in their nachos."
In March 2004, Frank Rich called Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" "a joy ride for sadomasochists."
